Alex Muriuki – CPA-K, LLB (Hons) Partner
Alex is a lawyer and certified accountant by training and was one of the original founders of VACL having worked for Deloitte & Touche for ten years. Prior to founding VACL, Alex was a Director of Deloitte & Touche specializing in indirect tax planning and management. He also developed tremendous experience in direct taxes, business planning, dispute resolution and management, training, lobbying and creating specialized tax arrangements.
As part of his achievements at Deloitte & Touche, Alex played a critical role in the formation of the indirect tax service line and also the establishment of the first customs practice outside of South Africa.

Edward Mwachinga – LLB (Hons) – Partner
Also one of the founding members of VACL, Edward, a lawyer by training, worked for both PriceWaterhouse Coopers in Nairobi and Deloitte & Touche Tanzania leaving as a Senior Manager in 2009. Edward has been involved in providing advice on tax legislation, principles and practice for a variety of clients including major mining, communication, and manufacturing companies. He has also provided advice to companies in sectors such as financial services, agriculture, civil engineering and energy.
He was involved in various projects including tax due diligence in mergers & acquisitions, advising on taxpayer remedies and resolution of disputes with revenue authorities, training, assisting in obtaining VAT refunds and providing general advice on market access, investment strategies and accessing investment incentives. He has also contributed many thought leadership articles in a weekly newspaper in East Africa and various newspapers in Tanzania.

Kairo Thuo – CPA-K, CPA-T, LLB (Hons) – Partner
Also a founder member of VACL, Kairo was a director of Deloitte in charge of Tax Transaction Advisory. Prior to establishing the TTA group, which was responsible for merger, acquisition, transaction arrangements, wealth structuring and funds management, corporate and legal structuring, Kairo had developed extensive experience in all areas of taxation in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania and has also been involved in tax matters involving other countries in Africa. His experience involved all areas of taxation and was responsible for establishing specialized tax service lines in direct and indirect taxation including customs, international tax and transfer pricing.
He has conducted numerous tax training seminars in Kenya and Tanzania and specific tax workshops for various clients in Kenya. He has also assisted numerous clients in resolving various disputes with the revenue authority and other regulatory authorities in Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania as well as lobbied for specific tax and legal positions in Kenya.
Amongst many of his key achievements Kairo remains the only individual to-date to be recognized by the Kenya Revenue Authority in the annual taxpayers’ awards for contribution towards tax education in Kenya having also been recognized by the IFC for outstanding tax advice contribution in the Kenya and Uganda Railways concession process. He also contributed to capacity enhancement for the East Africa Law Society and the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya. Kairo is also a regular contributor to the Business Daily and previously the East African Standard.

Isaac M. Ireri – MBA, BA (Bldg Econ), CPA – Director
Prior to joining VACL, Isaac was the head of transfer pricing for Deloitte East Africa. He was responsible for growing the new service line in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, by growing revenues, profits and staffing and training the transfer pricing team. His clients at Deloitte spanned the whole economic spectrum: automotive, financial services, horticulture and floriculture, air travel, shipping, telecommunications, engineering, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, petroleum, hospitality, commodity trading and certain industry groups. Prior to joining Deloitte East Africa, he was based in the USA working with another Big Four firm. He possesses a thorough understanding of transfer pricing and Excel modelling skills which he has applied in various transfer pricing assignments. His experience includes transfer pricing planning and documentation, assisting clients with transfer pricing implementation, financial modelling for intellectual property valuation and service fee allocations, defending clients in transfer pricing audits and FIN 48 reviews.

Mick Murphy – BA (Hons), CTA – Partner
Prior to founding VACL, Mick was a partner with Deloitte where he was responsible for growing the tax practices in Kenya, Mauritius, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. He was also responsible for the Africa Desk which involved two roles, supporting the development of the firm’s tax practices in Sub-Saharan Africa and advising multinational companies in structuring their businesses in Sub-Saharan Africa. During his years of practice as Partner he successfully grew the business in terms of profitability, quality clients, developing staff and expanding the range of tax services offered by the practices. Prior to coming to East Africa Mick worked with Deloitte in Johannesburg, London and Moscow and has gained extensive experience in advising on cross-border transactions.
Amongst his key achievements was to initiate TaxIn Africa, the only Pan-African tax publication, the Investing in Africa CD which contained investment advice on 37 African countries and presenting at many international events. The Africa Desk role required him to work in a number of African countries and as such he gained extensive experience in doing business in Africa.
